Eurovision Song Contest 2014 -- Semifinal 2

Semifinal 2

Here is the rundown on Semifinal 2 according to the experts at Radio Free Järbo.
** = We predicted it would make the finals, and it did
* = We predicted it would not make the finals, but it did.
- = We predicted it would make the finals, but it did not.

Malta**
Firelight "Coming Home"
While it starts out kind of "folksy" the song builds and we end up liking it.  The voices in the group blend well together and these people know how to sing.  It is nice to have a song that tells a little bit of a story.   The video acknowledging World War I adds to the mood and is well done.
  • Radio Free Järbo votes for it to make the finals
  • Radio Free Järbo predicts it will make the finals
  • DJ David will buy it for his iPod
  • Nominee: Best looking man
  • Nominee:  Best Video

Israel
Mei Feingold "Same Heart"
Since when is Beyonce Jewish?  Oh, it's not Beyonce, it is just that the costumes in the video were Beyonce rejects.  We actually like her raspy voice with its Bonnie Tyler-like raspy quality. But we just can not like this song.  She deserves a better one.  The video has got to go.
  • Radio Free Järbo does not vote for it to make the finals
  • Radio Free Järbo predicts it will not make the finals
  • DJ David will never buy it for his iPod

Norway**
Carl Epson "Silent Storm"
There are a lot of songs similar to this in the competition this year.  At least this one is not going head-to-head with Axel Hirsoux or even Sanna Nielsen, at least not in the semifinal. The melody is quite nice, but we wish he would enunciate the words better so that we could hear them, which detracts from the song.  We think it will just eke by to go to the finals, but finish near the bottom.
  • Radio Free Järbo votes for it to make the finals
  • Radio Free Järbo predicts it will make the finals
  • DJ David maybe will buy it for his iPod, but maybe not.

Georgia
The Shin and Mariko "Three Minutes to Earth"
The countries of the Caucasus have really good songs, that is until this one.  The opening sounds like Native American scat singing.  What does this song mean, and what is up with that video?  The only thing we really liked was how they photographed their flag in the introductory piece.  Very clever.
  • Radio Free Järbo does not vote for it to make the finals
  • Radio Free Järbo predicts it will not make the finals
  • DJ David would bury his iPod before putting this song on it.

Poland*
Donatan and Cleo "My Słowianie - We Are Slavic"
Poland.  Pushed around for centuries, yet somehow manages to stick around.  Known to be the butt of jokes (at least in America).  Highly devout Catholic country.  And here they come to the ESC with a soft core porn video for their entry.  You have to LOVE this video, with its wicked sense of humor from start to finish.  But we are afraid the song isn't much without the video, however much it makes us laugh.  Shake what your momma gave you.  The joke's on us this time.  [We did not predict it would make the finals, but we are secretly glad, even thought the song did not work as well on stage as it did in the video.]
  • Radio Free Järbo does not vote for it to make the finals
  • Radio Free Järbo predicts it will not make the finals
  • DJ David will not be putting this song on his iPod, but he is trying to get the video.
  • Nominee:  Best Video

Austria**
Conchita Wurst "Rise Like a Phoenix"
Vengeance.  Retribution. This song has it all.  Conchita/Tom's voice is perfect for this well written song, and it stands up to the horns and violins in the background.  We think this is a real winner, provided Europe is ready for a dude in a dress with a dynamite song about standing up to intolerance.  We'll see. [Based on the reception that Concita got from the fans last night, Europe may be ready for a dude in a dress with a great song.  We think this may win, at least top 5.]
  • Radio Free Järbo votes for it to make the finals
  • Radio Free Järbo predicts it will make the finals
  • DJ David has it on his iPod already and has played it several times
  • We could nominate for both best looking man and best looking woman but will resist the temptation.

Lithuania
Vilija Matačiūnaitė  "Attention"
Absolute rubbish.  Lithuania can do and should have done better.
  • Radio Free Järbo does not vote for it to make the finals
  • Radio Free Järbo predicts it will not make the finals
  • Do you really think DJ David will put this on his iPod given the review above?
  • Nominee:  Best looking woman

Finland**
Softengine  "Something Better"
We were a little skeptical about Finnish rock but we actually ended up liking the song.  The guys have good voices for rock, which everyone thinks is easy, but is actually quite difficult to do well.  We've not forgiven Europe for giving last year's entry from Finland so few points, that is Krista Sigfried's wonderful"Marry Me."  This entry is unlikely to do as well as it should, however.  In the end, I am not sure it is Europe's taste, even if the guys are delicious.
  • Radio Free Järbo votes for it to make the finals
  • Radio Free Järbo predicts it will make the finals
  • DJ David probably won't put it on his iPod

Ireland-
Can-Lin "Heartbeat"
We really like the quality of her voice.  It has nice power when it needs it, but can go softer when it has to.  But the song is just so-so.  Too bad.  We loved Ireland's entry last year (and not just because of the drummers in tight leather pants) and may never forgive Europe for voting it dead last in the final.  Like with the Finnish entry above, this song's not going to redeem Ireland.  Alas.
  • Radio Free Järbo votes for it to make the finals
  • Radio Free Järbo predicts it will make the finals
  • DJ David will not put it on his iPod.
  • Nominee: Best looking woman

Belarus**
Teo  "Cheesecake"
We wanted to hate this song because it is just so silly, but we can not.  The tune is catchy and Teo is adorable in the video.  It stands out in the competition as the most different of the songs this year.  It's not a ballad or a love song; it's just a silly song to have some fun with.   And Teo does.  It should play well with teenage voters.
  • Radio Free Järbo votes for it to make the finals
  • Radio Free Järbo predicts it will make the finals
  • DJ David wants it for his iPod but will only play it in private

Macedonia
Tijana "To the Sky"
The song itself is fairly standard and not too highly original, although she has a nice "disco" song voice.  The borderline soft-core porn video, however, holds the interest in ways the song does not.  If that is typical Macedonian beefcake, get us a one way ticket to Skopje.

  • Radio Free Järbo does not vote for it to make the finals
  • Radio Free Järbo predicts it will not make the finals
  • DJ David won't put it on his iPod

Switzerland**
Sebalter  "Hunter of Stars"
Here is another song that dares to be a little different.  And here is another country that got robbed last year when it had a good song.  This has a lot of energy and it should do well.  We hope he can whistle on stage, however.
  • Radio Free Järbo votes for it to make the finals
  • Radio Free Järbo predicts it will make the finals
  • DJ David won't put it on his iPod
  • Nominee:  Best looking man
  • Nominee:  Best video

Greece*
Freaky Fortune "Rise Up"
This song doesn't know what it wants to be.  Is it rap, rock, hip hop, or should we accompany them on our klezmer?  It does nothing for us.
  • Radio Free Järbo does not vote for it to make the finals
  • Radio Free Järbo predicts it will not make the finals
  • DJ David won't put it on his iPod
  • Nominee: Best looking man (take your pick of the three of them)

Slovenia*
Tinkara Kovač "Round and Round"
She has a nice voice and we like the flute.  But the song doesn't speak to us.  The video is interesting, and the dancers must have had fun rolling around in the dirty water or whatever it was.
  • Radio Free Järbo does not vote for it to make the finals
  • Radio Free Järbo predicts it will not make the finals
  • DJ David won't put it on his iPod

Romania*
Paula Seling & OVI  "Miracle"
They have lovely voices that blend well together.  The song doesn't really work, though.  I really wish they had better material to work with, as this song is a waste of their good voices.   It would be a miracle if they win.
